Orchid Seed Flasking - Part 3 (2011)
6 Smart Techniques in Orchid Propagation
Orchids are becoming highly popular and many flower enthusiasts venture in growing these plants. These plants have a high market demand that orchid propagation is done to meet and supply the demands. Orchid propagation can be done in various techniques and this involves two methods, vegetative and generative propagation.
Vegetative Propagation method employs the use of parts of the growing plants. The parts that develop roots are removed from the parent plant then nurtured in pots or test tubes. The plant looks exactly the same as the parent plant because no pollination took place.
Vegetative propagation is probably the simplest method in reproducing orchids.
Generative propagation on the other hand, involves the growing of orchid seeds. This method of propagation is very difficult and time consuming. It involves the pollination of the seeds but a bit more complicated because the seeds are too small.
Techniques in orchid propagation
1. Division
This technique in propagating orchids is one of the most commonly used. This involves the division of orchid types that have rhizome and pseudo-bulbs. Each divided rhizome should have at least three pseudo-bulbs and new leads and be potted as soon as possible using fresh potting medium.
2. Back Bulbs
This is a method of propagating plants from pseudo-bulbs that have previously flowered or have not flowered at all. This is ideally done when repotting the orchids (you can divide the plant having at least two healthy back bulbs and a new shoot). However, plants propagated using this method may take longer periods to reach flowering size, usually 2 to 3 years or more.
3. Keiki or Daughter Plants
Keiki is a Hawaiian term for baby plants. Propagating using this method is usually used in Phalaenopsis orchids. The daughter plants develop on the flower stalks. When the baby plant has developed roots, they are removed to the parent plant by cutting them together with the part of the stalk of the parent plant where they are attached.
4. Cutting
This method involves the cutting of stem or stalk. For monopodial orchids that grow in one stem, the upper portion is cut when the roots are fully developed. The cut stem is then planted in coarse bark compost that is very aerated. Vandas are propagated using this method.
Sympodial orchids or those that grow with rhizome and pseudo-bulbs also use this method of propagation. The cutting is done in the stalks when the orchids produce small plants instead of flower buds. This method is very common to cane Dendrobiums.
5. Meristem or Tissue Culture
Meristem culture is a method usually employed when there is a need for mass production. It is performed under laboratory conditions to ensure maximum cleanliness and sterility to make the propagation successful. The method uses a small part of a cell taken from a new growth. It is peeled off and placed in a test tube with special rich nutrient solution until the lump tissues develop. The tissues can be divided into small pieces and reproduced in other test tubes to produce more tissues.
6. Seed Propagation
Seed propagation is the most complicated method in reproducing orchids. This entails laboratory and special techniques to sustain the growth of the orchids. Seeds are placed in special growing vessels to sustain the nutrients needed during germination and growth. Pollination is done by the grower using a toothpick, imitating the pollinating insects.

Is orchid potting mix okay to use?
I have two avocado seeds ready to be planted now..I am wondering if orchid potting mix or perlite soil from miracle-gro is okay to use..perhaps a mixture of both. I really don't know I'm looking for an answer? Lol.
If your orchid mix is bark I wouldn't use it for anything else. Get some normal potting mix and use that.
